is an important part of the life of St Augustine’s!
What?
A
big, friendly, busy group for pre-school children and their carers,
meeting on Wednesday mornings during term time from 10am to 12 noon. It
is run by a team of volunteers from the church, many of whom have young
children of their own. We try to create a place where children can
play safely, and where adults can find friendship and a supportive
community. It’s often noisy too…
What happens?
Children play
and join in activities as they choose. Refreshments are available for
everyone. From 10.15am there is a craft activity, and we finish the
morning with group singing from 11.40am to 12noon. We try to make the
most of the big spaces we have – there are special areas for babies,
for reading, craft, slides and ride-on toys. From time to time the
activities may have a Christian content, for example at Christmas and
Easter. Members are free to join in or not, as they feel comfortable.
What does it cost?
The weekly charge covers refreshments and other running costs, and is currently £2 per family.
What about membership?
Because
of the popularity of Hippo Club, we have had to introduce a membership
scheme. This has helped to maintain both the quality of the experience
for our members, and to keep Hippo Club as safe as possible. A child
may become a member by going on our waiting list. Our numbers are
reviewed regularly so that we can recruit new members throughout the
year. Once a child is a member, he or she is free to drop in to the
group as often or as little as they wish. The waiting time varies up to 9 months, but is currently about 2 months.
How can I find out more?
For people not
yet on the waiting list, we offer a free one-off ‘taster’ session on
any Wednesday morning convenient to you. After this, however, you would
not be able to attend until you are offered a place. For further
